Only 1 mile from the major artery from Durango to Purgatory, Silverton and
beyond is one of the loveliest areas of Durango -the wooded mesa near the
incredibly beautiful Electra Lake. (We have a canoe for your use!) On this pine & spruce studded mesa sits the custom mountain home - The Clilffside House. This unique 3 bedroom/2.5 bath mountain jewel offers breathtaking views of the mountains and valley. With over 3200 square feet including two living areas (both with fireplaces), an office area in addition to the 3 bedrooms, there is plenty of room for family/friends. The circle drive leads to the front porch with rustic twig chairs and (in summer) beautiful window boxes of flowers that attract our local hummingbirds.
Walk into the front door into the log sided foyer and you know you are somewhere special. These logs and all the log accents throughout the home were locally harvested from the area and are masterpieces of nature's artwork; showing the intricate designs of the beetle paths. French doors then lead you to the main living area where you are immediately drawn to the wall of windows. You can see the lake in the far distance but the 11,000 ft Hermosa Cliffs dominate the views. Almost every room in the home enjoys these views and all bedrooms have their own patio areas that also takes advantage of this spectacular scenery.
The oak, wide plank wood floors carry out the rustic theme of the home. When sitting in the living room you don’t know which is the most attention getting: the views or the wonderful large stone fireplace (with 46 inch flat screen TV).
Another set of French doors lead to the covered outdoor dining area and the wrap around decks. Barbequing that trout you catch at Electra Lake (5 minutes away) is even better when you get to dine outdoors on the lovely elevated deck with valley views. Follow the deck around to the glorious covered outdoor living room. Just relax and watch the summer thunderstorms on the mountains or enjoy the falcons, blue jays, squirrels and humming birds that will be your summer visitors.
Enjoying meals with family and friends is a treat in this modern but rustic alder kitchen with granite counter tops, double ovens, 6 burner stove, wine cooler and walk in pantry . The stunning raised dining room is large enough to accommodate 10 with room to spare.
Completing this main level is the master suite with king size bed which boasts a master bath to die for. French doors lead to the travertine tiled bathroom with double sinks and soaking in the claw foot massage tub with its two walls of windows is almost like soaking outdoors! The oversized walk in shower is special too! A steam shower will invigorate you after a day on the slopes or summer hikes. The walk in closet provides plenty of room!
However, open the French doors on the other side of the bedroom and you walk into the outside living area described above. The cool summer nights and mountain breezes make sleeping heavenly!
The lower level of the home is a perfect place for the kids. The second fireplace further enhances the cozy second living room with its own TV/ DVD . If you must work there is an office area with double sofa bed, hi speed internet and WiFi. Best of all you can go right to your car in the garage through this family area in case you happen to visit during our refreshing mountain thunderstorm or during our winter snows.
The second bedroom (with queen bed) and third bedroom with trundle bed and a single bed both have sliding glass doors to their own paved covered patio areas. A great place to relax with a good book or a summer afternoon nap. The downstairs bathroom and will delight you with a rustic stone vanity like none like you have ever seen and a travertine tiled shower. The laundry room rounds out this lower level.
This is just the house. The location of it is a major part of its draw. A 5 minute drive takes you to Electra Lake where the fishing is great (and you don’t need a fishing license!). There is no major development on this lake so its pristine woods and snow capped peaks are part of “old Colorado”. A wonderful restaurant in an old sporting club sits right on the lake. Take you own bottle of wine - enjoy excellent food and marvel at Engineer Mountain (the near 13, 000 ft peak) out the windows.
12 minutes north of The Clilffside House is Durango Mt Resort (Purgatory) where every winter sport you could ask for awaits you- from alpine/Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, tubing hills to snowmobiling. Or just enjoy a massage in the day spa and have a cocktail in front of the fire as you watch the skiers come down the hill. In summer, the resort comes alive with concerts in the big tent, mountain biking, alpine slides, kids day camps, bungee tramps, climbing walls and horseback riding. Outdoor dining and the cute mountain shops can round out your summer day.
The best hiking is in this north county area of Durango. Just minutes from The Clilffside House are trail heads of the most beautiful hikes that the Durango has to offer. Not to mention high mountain streams for fishing, back trail for biking, ATV-ing, jeeping or horse back riding.
Just 20 minutes south of The Clilffside Houses is the wonderful historic western town of Durango. Stroll its historic streets, dine at one of the over 30 bars and restaurants or enjoy one of the many street fairs. The Animas River runs right though town for your white water rafting or fishing pleasures. Rent a bike and cycle the trail throughout down and pull off to have lunch at The River Rat Café. There you can watch the rafters and tubers head down the river. Don’t forget to catch the historic Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a breathtaking ride to the high mountain historic town of Silverton.
Durango has it all and The Clilffside House is the perfect vacation home in any season
